The Madrid Marathon returns in September with security measures, like the rest of popular races in times of coronavirus
The marathons , one of the main hobbies of Madrid , are held again in Madrid after a break of more than a year . Thus, the 2021 calendar is being reactivated with the protagonist, EDP Rock ‘n’ roll Madrid Marathon , in the front row.
It will be held on September 26, and the Half Marathon , on November 14 . But it won’t be the first. On June 5, these popular races started with a premiere, the First Carabanchel Half Marathon . In addition, it featured the participation of Spanish athletics legend Abel Antón.
Madrid Marathon 2021
After a year without being able to celebrate, in September the star of the marathons returns in the capital. It will be the 43rd edition of the EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series Madrid and will have three distances ( marathon , half marathon and 10k). It is estimated that about 39,000 runners from all countries of the world will participate.
The appointment will be at Paseo de la Castellana at 8:45 on September 26. Those interested who still do not have their reserved place can register until August 31 or until the capacity is completed. To reach the goal , located on the Paseo del Prado , the runners will have to travel a total of 42,195 meters of urban land indicated with a green line .
The marathon will pass through some of the points most emblematic of the city as Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, Puerta Europa, Cuatro Torres, La Puerta de Sol , Almudena Cathedral , the Royal Palace and the Museum of the Prado.
This edition, EDP Rock ‘n’ Roll Running Series Madrid will be governed by the measures recommended by health institutions at all times to avoid contagion of Covid-19. The races will be spaced in time so that the ten kilometer route will start at 7:45 am, the marathon will be at 8:45 am and the half will begin at 11:00 am.
In addition, participants must provide a vaccination certificate with the complete schedule, a negative PCR test or an antigen test carried out 72 hours before the collection of numbers. The capacity of the event will be reduced by 30% and the use of a mask will be necessary except at the time of the sports event.
The first Carabanchel Half Marathon
The Carabanchel district held the first edition of the Carabanchel Half Marathon on June 5 and had the athlete Abel Antón as its ambassador. 500 people participated, complying with the limit of 500 numbers that had been established as the maximum capacity to respect the Covid-19 measures.
The corresponding security protocols and all the necessary hygienic measures were maintained. Starting and finishing at the Puente de Toledo , he toured, starting at 8:30 p.m., several emblematic areas of Carabanchel, as well as Madrid Río . The Colonia de la Prensa, the Plaza de Carabanchel or the Ermita de San Isidro were some of the places of passage for the athletes.
The runner Abel Antón, a legend in Spanish athletics, participated as well as an ambassador for the event, as one of the hares of the race . Thus he set the pace to complete the 21 kilometers in one hour and 30 minutes. The local athlete from Carabanchel César Deleyto also joined as a hare for the time of one hour and 45 minutes .
All participants received a t-shirt and those who finished the race, a medal . The three women who obtained the best position were awarded, the first three men and the best times of local Carabanchel runners, in the female and male category. There were also prizes for the age ranges of the participants.
The Carabanchel Half Marathon was one of the first popular races to return to the capital after the pandemic. The goal was to promote sport in the district and even more so in times of Covid-19. Due to the great success of this first edition, the Carabanchel Half Marathon already has a date for 2022 , whose reservation of places has already begun.
Marathons in times of pandemic
Since the state of alarm was proclaimed, countless marathons have been postponed or canceled to avoid an increase in the number of infections, being events where many people are concentrated.
Important races like the Madrid Marathon 2020 or Half Marathon 2020 postponed their dates a few months, but he did not improve the situation finally canceled.
The new marathons in times of pandemic must follow the rigorous Covid regulations, whose primary requirement is to reduce the number of numbers per race in order to maintain the determined capacity .
