Five students have received a one-time scholarship of Tk 15,000 under the Abdus Salam Trust Fund, the founding secretary of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Dhaka University. At the same time, retired professor of the department Shamsul Majid Harun has been given a lifetime achievement award.
The scholarships and honors were given at a function titled ‘Editor Abdus Salam Trust: Lifetime Achievement Award, Memorial Lecture and Student Scholarship Award-2022’ at Dhaka University Professor Muzaffar Ahmad Chowdhury Auditorium on Monday morning.
The five students who received the scholarship are the students of the 11th batch (2017-18 academic year) of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism. Sohag Ali, Swapna Parveen, Md. Khokon Ali, Jobayer Ahmed and Md. Abdul Malek.
Vice-Chancellor said in a speech as the chief guest. Akhtaruzzaman said, “Editor Abdus Salam Memorial Trust Fund was set up by the late journalist ABM Musa. I pay my deep respects to the memory of these two late journalists.
The Vice-Chancellor urged the students to follow the lives and deeds of the two late journalists and develop themselves as good citizens. He said that due to their talent, skills, patriotism and unique professionalism, they went from individual to organization.
These two leaders of the world of journalism have worked all their lives to awaken human values and patriotism in the society.
Mamtajuddin Ahmed, Treasurer of the University was the special guest at the function presided over by Abul Mansur Ahmed, Chairman, Department of Mass Communication and Journalism and conducted by Robayet Ferdous.
Journalist Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul gave a memorandum titled ‘Role of Mass Media in Creating Social Awareness’. Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences Zia Rahman and teachers and students of the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism were present on the occasion. Editor Abdus Salam Memorial Trust Fund memorandum was also published at this time.
