At least 11 construction workers were injured when a building under construction of Ridisha Food and Beverage factory collapsed in Gazipur’s Sreepur. The incident took place at Nagarhaola village on Tuesday evening. According to information provided by factory workers, the names of the eight injured were immediately found. The injured people are Jamalpur Sadar Upazila. Ripon Mia (21), Md. Balli village of Khaliajuri upazila of Netrokona. Morshed (26), Md. Hossain (24), Md. Sajjad (19), Chand Mia (26), Md. Shafiq (20), Syed Noor (21) and Azmat Ali (29).
Rubel Mia, a worker at the factory, said work was under way on the ground floor of a new building inside the Ridisha Food and Beverage Factory. 15-16 construction workers were working on the roof and ground floor. The roof suddenly collapsed yesterday evening. The workers working on the roof fell down. Many of the workers were crushed in the rubble. After a while, the fire service people came and rescued them.
Iftekhar Raihan Chowdhury, station officer of Sreepur Fire Service and Civil Defense, told Prothom Alo around 11:15 pm last night that no one was killed in the roof collapse of the factory. According to the latest information, 11 workers were injured. They are undergoing treatment at different places including Gazipur Sadar Hospital and Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Faisal Arefin, the factory’s administrative officer, said the cause of the collapse was not yet known. The injured workers have been treated by the factory authorities.
Sreepur Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Kabir Hossain said several workers were injured in the building collapse.
