OAKLAND –
First up was rookie catcher Logan O’Hoppe. Then there was Mike Trout. And, of course, Shohei Ohtani. The three homers added six runs for star starter Tyler Anderson.
The Angels beat the Athletics 6-0 on Sunday at RingCentral Coliseum.
Over the last two games, the Angels scored 19 runs, a significant difference from what the team put up on opening night.
“Like I said, I’m not worried about the offense,” coach Phil Nevin reiterated Saturday.
On Sunday, O’Hopp knocked in the game’s first three runs in the top of the fourth inning. His home run went in between the top of the green fence at the 362-meter mark and the bottom of the Coliseum’s lowest stands.
O’Hoppe hit the first home run of his major league career and trotted around the bases with a confident look.
Almost everyone on the Angels stood up to watch O’Hopper’s shot. Ohtani and José Suarez were among the players who left the box without a lane with their arms raised in the air.

O’Hopp flashed a big smile once he touched home plate and was greeted by his teammates.
Trout and Ohtani followed with back-to-back home runs — Trout hitting two shots and Ohtani a solo homer — in the fifth inning, his first of the season.
Ohtani hit a home run on the first pitch. Angels fans in Troll barely finished celebrating Trout’s home run and Trout donned his home run celebration cap moments before the next celebration was due.
For his part, Anderson shut out the A’s over six innings, scattering four hits, walking two batters and striking out four.
