The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Detective Branch (DB) has claimed that ‘shooter’ Masum Mohammad alias Akash has confessed to shooting dead former general secretary of Dhaka’s Motijheel Thana Awami League Zahidul Islam alias Tipu. During the interrogation during the seven-day remand, Masum gave some more important information, said DB.
Masum’s seven-day remand in the Jahidul murder case ended on Monday. On the same day, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Motijheel Division of DB Rafiqul Islam told Prothom Alo that Masum had given some important information during interrogation. This information is being checked and sorted. He will be produced in court on Tuesday.
Based on the information provided by Masum, DB says that on the day of the incident, Masum went to Shahjahanpur on a motorcycle and shot Zahidul. At that time his friend Mollah Shamim was riding a motorcycle. He is also under the surveillance of the intelligence, said DB.
DB official Rafiqul Islam said Masum started living apart from his family as he was involved in several cases including murder. He was frustrated with these cases. Masood said during interrogation that he was promised to save Jahidul from those cases if he could be killed.
Regarding the weapons and motorcycles used in the murder, Masum told DB that an acquaintance had given him weapons and motorcycles. After the incident, he went to a certain place and handed over the weapon and motorcycle to the person.
RAB has arrested four people, including Awami League leader Omar Farooq, on suspicion of plotting to assassinate Zahidul on Friday. They were later handed over to the investigating agency DB. DB sought their 10-day remand after appearing in the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court on Sunday. The court granted a five-day remand to each.
Detective police have arrested former BCL leader Arfan Ullah as a suspect in the incident. Arfan was produced in court on Monday after a one-day remand in an arms case. The court granted him a five-day remand.
Speaking at a press conference on Saturday, RAB said that Jahidul was killed due to conflict over control of criminal world, extortion in Motijheel area, tender bazaar, school-college admission-trade, control of various markets including raw market. Apart from this, the accused in the murder case of Juba League leader Rizvi Hasan alias Bocha Babu in AGB Colony in 2006 were also involved in the murder, RAB said.
