Russian forces have stepped up attacks in eastern Ukraine. Intense fighting is raging in the eastern city of Severodonetsk with Ukrainian forces. The British Defense Ministry says Russian forces have begun operations to take control of the eastern city of Izim. This activity is being noticed anew for the last 48 hours.
According to a tweet from the British Ministry of Defense, the Russian forces have taken this step mainly to enter further into the Donetsk region and north of the city of Severodonetsk. Many residents of Izim town are trapped there.
Russian forces are also launching air strikes to take full control of Severodonetsk. Meanwhile, Luhansk Governor Serhiy Haidai said that Luhansk was also under heavy attack by Russian troops. At the same time, they are trying to capture the village of Sirotin in the Severodonetsk region and the small town of Borivsk. Oleh Sinihubov, the governor of the Kharkiv region, said Russian forces had launched rocket attacks on the outskirts of Kharkiv. The municipal building has been damaged. Russia, meanwhile, has accused Ukraine of retaliating. The country’s news agency RIA reported that Ukrainian forces were bombing Donetsk. The attack caused a mine to lose power. As a result, 8 miners are trapped in that coal mine. Kiev, however, did not respond to requests for comment.
Two thousand foreign fighters killed
Russia, meanwhile, released new information about the Ukraine war last Friday. The country’s defense ministry says mercenaries and military experts from 64 countries have joined the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Among them, about two thousand foreign mercenaries were killed.
Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said: “As of June 17, we have a list of mercenaries and weapons management experts from 64 countries. Since the start of the special military operation, 8,958 such troops have arrived in Ukraine.
Igor Konashenkov said 1,958 of these troops had already been killed. 1,069 people have left Ukraine. Now 3,221 mercenaries are alive.
Progress to get EU membership
When this is the case, the European Union (EU) has begun taking steps to grant Ukraine membership. Before applying for membership of this union, any country is given the opportunity to become a candidate for membership in terms of application.
This time Russia’s target is Izim
Last Friday, the European Commission recommended that Ukraine be granted the status of a candidate. It takes several years in any country to get a recommendation on the status of a candidate. But Ukraine got it in a short time. Al-Jazeera reports that Ukraine applied for EU membership on February 24, four days after the start of the Russian invasion. The country is going to get the status of a candidate for EU membership in less than a year. The final decision will be made at the EU summit on June 23 and 24.
Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has proposed launching a military training program for Ukrainian security forces. He made the offer during a visit to Kiev on Friday without any prior announcement. This is his second visit to Kiev since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Zelensky welcomed Boris as a “big friend.”
Russian President Vladimir Putin has said he hopes Russia’s relations with Ukraine will return to normal after a visit to the country on Friday. He was speaking at an economic forum in St. Petersburg. Today’s speech was broadcast on television. There he spoke about the ongoing economic crisis around the world. According to Putin, Russia’s campaign in Ukraine is not responsible for inflation in many countries. Western countries are blaming Moscow for covering up their mistakes.
