Three people were killed in two separate accidents in Alamdanga and Jivannagar upazilas of Chuadanga. Among the dead are two from Alamdanga and one from Jivannagar.
The driver and his assistant were killed when a truck carrying corn overturned in the Ganga-Kopotaksh (GK) canal in Alamdanga upazila. The accident took place on Monday afternoon on the Chuadanga-Kushtia highway in front of the Dumbalpur Community Clinic in Kalidaspur Union. The deceased were identified as truck driver Md. Ibrahimpur village of Juranpur union of Damurhuda upazila of the district. Al Amin (38) and driver’s assistant Ashiq Hossain (28) of the same village.
Citing relatives and eyewitnesses of the deceased, Alamdanga Police said the truck was carrying corn from Sarojganj Bazar in Chuadanga Sadar Upazila to Kushtia. When the truck reached the Dumbalpur Clinic in Kalidaspur Union of Alamdanga Upazila on the Chuadanga-Kushtia Highway, a drum truck (specially made for carrying sand) loaded corn pushed the truck from behind. When the truck driver lost control at that time, the truck overturned in the Ganga-Kopotaksh (GK) canal on the side of the road. The driver and his assistant died on the spot.
Upon receiving the news of the accident, a unit of Fire Service and Civil Defense from Alamdanga and a team of Alamdanga Police arrived at the spot and started the rescue operation. After recovering the bodies of the driver and his assistant, the police prepared an inquest report.
Alamdanga Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Saiful Islam told Prothom Alo that the body was handed over without an autopsy following a written request from the family. Attempts are being made to identify the truck that caused the accident.
Earlier, a teenager in the driver’s seat was killed when a tractor overturned and fell into a 15 feet deep ditch at Gangadaspur in Border Union of Jivannagar Upazila around 5:30 am. The deceased was identified as Hasan Ali, 15, of Goalpara village in the union. The death toll in separate road accidents in the district on the same day stood at three.
