USA Futures Qualifier Maeve DeYoung Sends Verbal to Mizzou

Fitter and Faster Swim Camps is the proud sponsor of SwimSwam’s College Recruiting Channel and all commitment news. For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.

High school junior Maeve DeYoung has announced her decision to swim and study at the University of Missouri beginning in the fall of 2024:

“I’m extremely hyped to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Missouri! I would like to thank my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for helping me get to this point. I would also like to thank the coaches at Mizzou for giving me this amazing opportunity. I can’t wait to be a Tiger!!🐯🖤💛”

DeYoung swims year-round for Lake Oswego Swim Club based out of Oregon and competes for West Linn High School. She primarily swims back and fly events, with the 200 back being her best at this point of her career. At the 2022 Oregon High School 6A State Championships, she placed 3rd in the 100 back (55.88), which was considered an All-American Consideration time by the NISCA for the 2021-2022 high school season. She was 4th in the 100 fly (56.67).

Best times (SCY):

50 back- 26.29
100 back- 55.25
200 back- 1:59.32
100 fly- 56.27
200 fly- 2:05.52

At the 2022 USA Swimming Futures Championship site in Santa Clara, DeYoung swam to best times in the 200 back (2:19.00) and 100 fly (1:03.45). She placed 6th in the 200 back finals, nearly hitting her best time (2:19.06). For the 2022 long course season, that 200-back time ranked her 63rd in the nation among 15-16 year-olds. Her best 200 back (SCY) time (1:59.32), was good for 57th in the nation among the same age group.

In the 2021-2022 NCAA season, Mizzou had no scorers at the national championships in the 200 backstroke. Their best 200 backstroker that year was Meredith Rees, who put up a 1:53.82 during the preliminaries of the 2022 SEC Championships. She finished 8th in that event during the finals (1:55.21).

At Mizzou, DeYoung will be joining swimmers like distance-free specialist Chloe Mudadu (high school class of 2023), and versatile IM/mid-distance free specialist Peyton Drexler (high school class of 2023). So far, DeYoung is the first in the class of 2024 to announce her commitment to Mizzou. Currently, there are no swimmers on the roster from Oregon. In fact, there are currently no swimmers from either roster from the west coast of the US.

Not only does DeYoung shine in the pool, but she also shows proficiency within the classroom, as she is a two-time USA Swimming Scholastic All-American. The qualifying standards for this award entail a minimum 3.5 GPA and at least one individual time equal to or faster than a 2022 Winter Junior Championships qualifying time.
