Workers clash in Satkhira, attack on newspaper office

Two groups of Satkhira district bus minibus micro workers union have clashed. Several people were injured. The workers also attacked a local newspaper office. The incident took place around 11 am on Sunday.

Labor leader Sheikh Rabiul Islam said that this morning Akhtar, Tipu, Shahjahan and Milon, workers of Zahid group, together beat Masum and Ratan of Rabi Mohabbat group from the bus terminal. Due to this, the workers of Ravi Mohabbat group attacked them in retaliation. Two to three more workers were injured. At this time tension was created among the workers. There was a chase between the workers at the bus terminal. They stopped the movement of vehicles. He barricaded the road with bamboo.

He further said that after receiving the news of the clash, the police took position at the spot. In front of the police, the workers hurled brickbats at the office of the daily Kalerchitra, edited by Abu Ahmed, a heroic freedom fighter and vice-president of the district Awami League. They smashed the doors and windows of the newspaper building and searched for Abu Ahmed. Principal Abu Ahmed was out of the district town at the time.

Elections for Satkhira Bus Minibus and Micro Workers Union were to be held on Saturday. But a writ petition was filed in the high court alleging that the Election Commission was biased in the election, making the Ashram workers voters and compiling the voter list excluding the actual workers.

The court adjourned the election for three months. Following the news, a group of workers hurled brickbats at the Daily Kalerchitra office on Friday night.

The editor of the newspaper, Principal Abu Ahmed, is the president of the District Bus Minibus Owners Association. Workers also attacked the newspaper’s office on Sunday.

Some of the workers are in favor of the election, while others are in favor of postponing the election on the orders of the court. This is the beginning of the dispute.

Principal Abu Ahmed said he did not know anything about the clash. He was on a program outside the city at the time of the incident. However, he alleged that the police did not take proper action during the clash.

Satkhira Sadar Police Station OC Golam Kabir said two groups of workers were facing off over the election. Police tried to bring the situation under control in the morning. He found out that some people from both sides were injured in this. No party has yet filed a case in this regard. Currently the situation is calm.
